If you have a lot of sanding to do, a portable belt sander can be a real workhorse in your shop. Although it generates a lot of dust and noise, it is great to strip old layers of paint, grind down bumps, remove burns and marks, level and smooth surfaces.
It takes a certain time to develop skill and confidence with a portable belt sander. First, you need your both hands to handle it safely. You don’t need to apply more pressure when sanding with a 4" x 24" belt sander because its weight alone provides sufficient sanding pressure. Just allow the tool to balance itself and let it do the work.
Because it continues to remove material on the back stroke, this allows to do the job faster. However, you must avoid sanding across the grain and sand from the inside out to keep square edges.
