Before the millennium, the table shaper with a fixed arbor was the most commonly used way for profiling or molding stock. However, because of the high cost, some cabinetmakers had the idea of designing a wooden table in order to be able to fix their own portable router.
Thanks to the emergence of new carbide router bits used for complex profiles in several successive passes, some manufacturers came to develop more sophisticated routing tables which were much more accessible financially.
