Description

Invented in 1874 by Benjamin Forstner, Forstner bits bore precise clean sharp holes with straight sides and flat bottoms in all type of wood and in any orientation with respect to the wood grain. No other type of bit can match the quality of cut of a Forstner bit.

The bit includes a center point which guides it throughout the cut (and incidentally spoils the flat bottom of the hole).

The cylindrical cutter around the perimeter shears the wood fibers at the edge of the bore, and also helps guide the bit into the material more precisely. Stagger tooth design is found on larger diameters for maximum performance

The radial cutting edges plane off the material at the bottom of the hole; to increase life, it is suggested to allow the bit to cool for a few seconds between passes.

Unlike most other types of drill bits, Forstner bits require greater force to push them into the material. While small diameters can be used with portable drills, larger ones will require the use of a drill press.

CMT has come up with a 16 piece industrial kit at an affordable price:

  • Made of super strength steel, all bits are 3–9/16" (90mm) long with 3/8" round diameter shank which makes them more rigid and more precise.
  • Recommended RPM in softwood may go from 2400 (small dia.) down to 500 (larger sizes). In hardwood, RPM may vary from 700 (small dia.) down to 250 (larger sizes)
  • Contains most popular cutting diameter sizes:
    • 1/4" (6,35mm), 3/8" (9,52mm), 1/2" (12,7mm), 5/8" (15,87mm), 3/4" (19,05mm) and 7/8" (22,22mm) bits have solid rim design
    • 1" (25,4mm), 1–1/8" (28,57mm), 1–1/4" (31,75mm), 1–3/8" (34,92mm), 1–1/2" (38,1mm), 1–5/8" (41,27mm), 1–3/4" 44,45), 1–7/8" 47,62), 2" (50,80mm) and 2–1/8" (54mm) bits have saw tooth design
  • Comes in a sturdy padded orange plastic case (hard to misplace…)

This should not make a big hole in your wallet!
